CBD For Inflammation
Inflammation is a misunderstood term. It’s abstract, and a lot of people probably take it as some minor footnote in health conditions. However, inflammation is actually responsible for the pain that accompanies debilitating conditions such as Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, and general muscle and body aches. Therefore, when you’ve heard about CBD’s great impact on pain, one of the concepts (though not the only one) is what CBD can do for inflammation.
Endocannabinoid System and Inflammation
You can read our guide on what CBD is and get the basics. But to get to the heart of how CBD is helpful for inflammation, let’s briefly discuss the Endocannabinoid System, or ECS. This system is made of Cannabinoids, which exist in our bodies naturally. CBD is short for Cannabidiol, and that’s a type of Cannabinoid. The ECS is made up of these chemicals and their receptors. When you take CBD into your system, not only does it serve as a supplement to your natural Cannabinoids but it causes your body to produce more.
One of the main jobs of the ECS is to give us homeostasis, or balance. One of the imbalances that can befall even the best of us is inflammation. When an imbalance—an excess—of white blood cells starts to zip through our systems, in causes swelling, which in turn results in inflammation. Inflammation causes pain. To reach homeostasis, our ECS system wants to restore balance. It sends out its appropriate chemical signals to fix the overload of blood cells and in the process, brings down inflammation.
Many places where one finds pain, one also finds inflammation. Here are a listof conditions that a) involve inflammation and b) have been proven to be helped by use of CBD:
- Auto-immune diseases
- High blood pressure/pulmonary and cardio issues
- Crohn’s Disease
It is now believed that many sufferers of these nagging—and often threatening—conditions have what medical professionals recognize as a deficiency of natural (endo) Cannabinoids. This establishes that like vitamins and minerals, Cannabinoids are essential to our systems. When one takes CBD, one is most-likely restoring an imbalance that led to the condition they’re trying to remedy.
CBD for Alzheimer’s
Alzheimer’s is, of course, a serious, frightening, and confusing condition. For that reason, it bears its own discussion in terms of how inflammation plays a role and how CBD helps with the inflammation.
You know about Alzheimer’s effects on memory and cognitive functions like clear and rational thinking. One usually doesn’t think about inflammation when thinking about this disease, and that’s partly because many associate inflammation with pain,as that with Arthritis, Migraines, etc. Well, inflammation isn’t the cause of Alzheimer’s, but not only is it present in Alzheimer’s patients, but inflammation actually worsens the mental deterioration that is a major part of the disease. In short, an increase in cytokines, the culprit in our systems that causes inflammation, has been linked by studies to an increased mental breakdown. Studies that prove CBD suppresses the growth of cytokines give us a good scientific grounding in how the Cannabinoid actively fights inflammation. And how does that translate into actual relief of Alzheimer’s? Well, a 2017 study in Frontiers in Pharmacology demonstrates multiple important benefits of CBD for people with Alzheimer’s.
- CBD Seems to Reverse Mental Deterioration- Now, this would be a major breakthrough,
and it’s still in the exploratory stage. The study did research on rats, so human studies would
be a better development. However, the study looked at rats with symptoms very similar to AD
and found that one of their symptoms, a breakdown in spatial skills, was helped through
several days of regular CBD treatment. Let’s also note that a 2014 study showed better social
recognition in rats—many sufferers of AD mistake one person for another. So, theoretical
evidence of CBD’s ability to significantly improve the symptoms of AD is mounting.
- CBD protects neurons- When someone is forgetful, disoriented, etc., there’s a practical
reason behind it—their neurons are damaged. In short, CBD acts as an antioxidant.
To give you the jargon, it prevents gliosis, the atrophy—breakdown—of neurons that
is often present in AD.
- CBD has anti-inflammatory effects- As mentioned above, CBD’s anti-inflammatory
activities extend to those that fight Alzheimer’s.
This demonstrates that regular use of CBD is likely to be beneficial both in the treatment of and the prevention of this terrible neurological disease. It impacts so many proteins and chemicals in our brain in so many ways that ward off the atrophy that makes up AD.
CBD and Cancer
In a previous post, we looked at one tremendous benefit of CBD, the discouragement of the growth of some breast cancer cells. That isn’t a claim that CBD is a wonder drug for cancer, just a statement of facts. In terms of inflammation, it is present in many cancer patients and is the cause of much of the pain they feel. Therefore, just as THC is associated with cancer relief, CBD is helpful for the pain component.
Those who beat cancer still feel pain afterward. A woman named Bonnie Annis wrote an article describing CBD’s benefits for her post-cancer pain. In addition to relaxation and better sleep, Annis experienced a marked decrease in pain due to CBD.
It’s OK to be skeptical about the things you hear or read about CBD. It comes at you from a lot of directions and can be confusing. However, it turns out that the anti-inflammatory effects of CBD are documented and scientifically-proven. So, rather than some vague idea about how CBD can ease pain, you now have understand the how in a detailed fashion.
